Mitten Grand Rapids

In 2012, lifelong friends Chris Andrus and Max Trierweiler converted historic Engine House No. 9—a decommissioned Victorian firehouse and Grand Rapids landmark—into the home of The Mitten Brewing Company. 

With a small footprint including a three-barrel brewhouse, single-deck pizza oven, twelve tables and bar, The Mitten became the first working brewery on Grand Rapids’ West Side since Prohibition. The taproom’s vintage baseball theme—a nod to the owners’ boyhood interest—created a unique and welcoming addition to the city’s growing craft beer scene. 

Over the years, the company grew and so did its capacity at the Engine House. Adding an upstairs taproom, wraparound two-story deck and outdoor biergarten, the Grand Rapids taproom can accommodate more than 250 guests as well as private rentals, tours, keg sales, and large takeout orders.

A point of pride for the company has been its numerous accolades, notably being named “Best Pizza” five times by both Grand Rapids Magazine and Revue West Michigan, and taking home wins at Great American Beer Fest in 2018 and World Beer Cup in 2016, 2022, and 2023.
